He came out of Peoria High School in Peoria, Illinois as a highly touted three sport athlete who excelled in football, wrestling and track & field. By the time that he graduated from Augustana in 1975 with a degree in social work he made history by being the first individual to win an NCAA Division III national title. He won the 440 yard intermediate hurdles in the 1974 national meet in a school and national record of :53.3. That same year he was an All-American in the mile relay. To this day he still has the fourth fastest time in Augustana history in the (now) 400 hurdles and is on the mile relay list with the third fastest at 3:14.1. He won three straight CCIW championships in the 440 hurdles (1972-73-74) and helped the Vikings win conference team titles during each of those years. He was on a conference championship mile relay team in 1975. Four time letterwinner in football as a defensive back.

He currently serves as an after market manager for John Deere and Company, whom he has worked for since his graduation. Cornelious and his wife Rose have four children and he is an ordained minister who has served as a missionary to nine different countries. Earlier this year he was inducted into the Peoria Hall of Fame. He currently resides in Barboursville, Virginia.
