His .577 field goal percentage as a junior was the fifth-best in school history at the time. He earned second team All-College Conference of Illinois honors as a sophomore after averaging 12.7 points and 5.9 rebounds a game. His scoring and rebounding improved to 18.5 points and 8.7 rebounds as a junior and 19 points and 9.4 rebounds as a senior, earning him first team All-CCI status each year.

In addition to his achievements on the basketball court, where he served as a team captain his senior year, Strombom was also an outstanding catcher and pitcher for four years with the Viking baseball team.

Following his graduation from Augustana, George earned his Master’s degree in education from Northern Illinois University in 1972. He went on to both teach and serve as principal in Dundee, Illinois district #300. He and his family were active members of the St. Stephen Lutheran Church of Dundee.
