Augustana College Athletics

Ralph Bengston, a 1921 graduate, was among one of the college's first four-sport lettermen.  Bengston excelled in football, basketball, baseball, and track, competing in the latter two at the same time.  He earned a total of 13 varsity letters including four each in football basketball, and baseball and one in track. 

Bengston served as a captain of both the football and basketball team and was picked twice to the All-Conference football team as a halfback.  In 1930 he was named the honorary Captain of the All-time All-Augustana football team chosen by the Observer and coaching staff.  Bengston was welcomed into the Hall of Honor in 1978.
