Tom Tingle had no problem with challenges. He met each one with the same intensity that he used as an undersized linebacker on the football field. He was married as a freshman and he worked 20 hours a week throughout his entire college career. It didn’t deter him on either the football field or in the classroom as he established himself as a standout athlete and a fine student.

He was voted Most Valuable Freshman by his teammates in 1957. He missed the 1958 season and then came back as a sophomore in 1959 and was named the team’s “Best Tackler” and was a second team all-conference selection at linebacker. He was a first team all-conference pick in 1960 as a junior. During his senior year of 1961 he was voted team captain. Tingle was a unanimous first team choice at linebacker on the all-conference squad and he was an honorable mention All-American selection on both the Little All-American and the All-Lutheran teams.

After graduation he continued to be active in the Rock Island community, serving his church and various youth organizations while working as a chemist for Parr Instrument Company in Moline.
