Augustana College Athletics

Bob Gildea graduated from Augustana in 1949.  He was a two-sport standout, a team leader in both football and basketball, and his performance on both the field and court earned him a spot in Augustana College’s Tribe of Vikings Hall of Honor.

Gildea was a quarterback/tailback in football and helped lead Augustana to a pair of winning seasons.  In football he earned all conference and most valuable player honors.  Gildea finished his basketball career as Augustana’s second all time leading scorer.  He also had the distinction of being the first Viking to score over 30 points in a single contest when he exploded for 31 points in a 49-45 victory over North Central College in 1948.   His successes on the field and court have led him to be inducted into the Hall of Honor.
