Vikings close out Gene Cusic Classic with sweep of Hiram

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Augustana Vikings wrapped up a perfect weekend at the Gene Cusic Classic on Sunday, sweeping Hiram in the final day of action at Terry Park. Augustana took the opener 5–2 before erupting for a 13–3 win in the nightcap to finish the Florida trip with a 4–0 record.

Game One: Augustana 5, Hiram 2

The Vikings wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning. Ryan Coon sparked the offense, reaching base and eventually coming around to score when Kaileb Hackman lined an RBI single, giving Augustana a 1–0 lead.

Augustana widened the gap in the third inning with a three-run rally. Coon once again set the table with a base hit before advancing into scoring position. Hackman delivered again with another run-scoring hit to bring him home. Later in the inning, Charlie Bergin drove in a run with a single, and the Vikings continued applying pressure to push the lead to 4–0.

Hiram responded in the fourth inning with a solo home run to trim the deficit to 4–1.

The Vikings tacked on a key insurance run in the seventh. Coon reached safely for the third time in the game and eventually crossed the plate to extend the Augustana lead to 5–1.

Hiram plated a run late, but the Vikings closed the door to secure the win.

Coon paced the offense with three hits and three runs scored, while Hackman added two hits and an RBI. Bergin and AJ Macak each drove in runs as the Vikings finished with nine hits in the victory.

Game Two: Augustana 13, Hiram 3 (7 innings)

The Vikings carried their momentum from the opener straight into the second game, erupting for 13 runs to secure the sweep.

Augustana struck first in the opening inning. Coon reached base and moved into scoring position before Macak delivered an RBI double, bringing him home for the first run of the game.

The Vikings broke things open in the middle innings with a massive offensive surge.

Augustana pushed across three runs in the third inning. After a pair of runners reached base, Macak delivered again with an RBI single. Moments later, Lawson Shickel drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home another run before Gabe Kashycke followed with an RBI single to cap the rally and stretch the Viking lead.

The offense kept rolling in the fourth inning when the Vikings plated four more runs. Ryan Theile delivered a clutch two-RBI double to score Hackman and Coon. Macak then stepped to the plate and crushed a two-run home run to left field, extending the Augustana lead to 11–3.

Augustana added two more runs later in the game to push the lead to 13–3 and put the contest out of reach.

The Vikings totaled 11 hits in the second game of the day, with Hackman and Christian Clark each recording multiple hits. Macak drove in four runs to anchor the Augustana offense.

With the victory, Augustana completed a perfect 4–0 weekend at the Gene Cusic Classic. The Vikings improve to 8–3 on the season and return home March 14–15 for the Augustana Invitational.
