Vikings explode for 19 runs, Wallace earns 800th Augustana win

MOLINE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team made several statements in an explosive performance Friday night, cruising past Eureka 19–0 in seven innings at Swanson Stadium. The victory marked the 800th at Augustana for head coach Greg Wallace and the 877th of his collegiate head coaching career.

Augustana's offense erupted early and never slowed, tallying 19 runs on 17 hits while holding the Red Devils to just one hit on the night.

The Vikings wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first. Ryan Coon opened the inning with a single before Riley Hendren drove him home with a double to left center for the first run of the game. Kaileb Hackman followed with an RBI double of his own, and Charlie Bergin brought him home with another double to push the lead to 3–0.

Augustana kept the rally rolling. Ryan Theile reached and eventually scored on a passed ball before AJ Macak singled to keep the line moving. Zach Quimby then ripped a two-RBI double to right center, scoring Macak and Theile to extend the lead. Hendren later lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Quimby, and Hackman delivered again with a two-run double to center field. Bergin capped the massive inning with an RBI single as the Vikings erupted for 10 runs in the opening frame.

The Vikings added two more runs in the third inning. Bergin reached and later scored on a wild pitch before Quimby lined an RBI double to right field to bring home Macak and stretch the lead to 12–0.

Augustana broke the game wide open in the fourth inning with six more runs. Hendren singled to begin the rally before Macak drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home another run. Moments later, Quimby delivered the biggest swing of the night, launching a grand slam to center field to push the Viking lead to 17–0. Lawson Shickel later came around to score on a wild pitch to extend the lead even further.

The Vikings added their final run in the sixth inning when Macak tripled to right center and later scored on a wild pitch, making it 19–0.

While the offense dominated, Augustana's pitching staff was equally impressive.

Aidan Conners twirled six hitless innings, fanning nine and walking three to earn the victory. Jack Robertson entered in the seventh inning and allowed the only Eureka hit of the game while preserving the shutout as the Vikings closed out the run-rule victory.

Quimby led the offensive explosion, going 3-for-3 with seven RBI, including a grand slam and two doubles. Macak added three hits and four runs scored, while Bergin and Hackman each recorded multi-hit performances.
With the victory, Augustana improves to 9–3 on the season.

The Vikings return to action Saturday as the Augustana Invitational continues when they take on Central. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
