Women's lacrosse earns big win over Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Augustana Vikings women's lacrosse team secured a huge win over the Augsburg Auggies by a score of 23-3. 

In the opening period, the Vikings outscored Augsburg 7-0 with six different athletes scoring in the first 15 minutes of play. Em Dornbusch collected the first goal of the night to take the early lead. Madison Langewisch followed before Colleen Chiavola found the back of the net in a woman-up position 40 seconds later. In another woman-up play, Becca Lacina made the score  4-0 with 7:39 on the clock. Four minutes later, Dornbusch collected their second goal of the night, and Leah Greiber put a shot in the back of the cage in a woman-up position. Hayley Thompson closed out the period with a free-position goal to make the score 7-0.

In the second, Augie quickly scored in a woman-up play with a shot from Kritika Chitnis, with Anna Davison earning the assist. Chitnis followed two minutes later with another solo goal. Greiber and Langewisch tallied their second goal of the night to stretch the gap to 11-0. With 3:34 on the clock, Lacina scored on a free-position shot, and Jackie McNair closed the first half with a score of 13-0. 

Returning to action, Ariadna Escobar scored her first goal of the season off a pass by Davision. In a woman-up free-position play, Davison found the back of the net to create a 15-0 score. Two minutes later, Kendall Phelan earned her first goal before Dornbusch found the back of the cage on a free-position shot to make the game 17-0. Augsburg scored twice in the final four minutes of action, moving the game to 17-2 entering the final period of the game. 

The Vikings scored four times in the opening six minutes, with all goals coming straight off the draw control. Successful shots came from Rachel Wylie, two from Lacina, and Chiavola. The Auggies collected their final goal in a free-position shot, but Langewisch and Chiavola closed out the game with goals to conclude the victory 23-3.

12 different Vikings scored in the game, with Lacina leading with four goals. Chiavola and Langewisch followed with three apiece, and Davison tallied two assists. Defensively, Lacina caused four turnovers, and Langewisch won six draw controls.

With the win, Augie improves to 4-1 on the season and will be back in action tomorrow to battle Hamline.
