Men's lacrosse downed by Centenary

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. The Augustana Vikings men's lacrosse team fell to undefeated Centenary by a 22–4 score on Friday evening at Thorson-Lucken Field.

Centenary used a fast start and consistent offensive pressure throughout the first half to take control early, building a large advantage before halftime. The Vikings continued to compete throughout the second half and produced several strong offensive moments down the stretch.

The visitors struck quickly in the opening quarter and continued to add goals throughout the frame, jumping out to a commanding early lead. Centenary continued to push the pace in the second quarter, extending its advantage and taking a 14–0 lead into halftime.

Augustana fought back in the third period. The hosts finally broke through midway through the third quarter, courtesy of a Nik Schaafsma goal that put the Vikings on the board with 8:10 remaining in the period. Not backing down, the Vikings struck again. Jack Duffy set up Schaafsma for another score at the 3:14 mark, giving Schaafsma his second goal of the evening and cutting into the Centenary lead.

Augustana continued to push early in the fourth quarter. Duffy found the back of the net at the 13:46 mark after a feed from Jack Sergeant. Then, moments later, Schaafsma completed his hat trick with 11:49 remaining in regulation, giving Augustana its fourth goal of the contest.

Centenary added several goals in the final quarter to close out the 22–4 win.

Schaafsma led the Vikings offensively with three goals, while Duffy recorded one goal and one assist. Sergeant also contributed with an assist.

With the loss, Augustana drops to 3-3 on the year. The Vikings are back at home against Beloit on Saturday, March 14 at 1 p.m.
