Men's lacrosse drops defensive battle with Beloit

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. –- The Augustana Vikings men's lacrosse team came up short Saturday afternoon, falling 5–2 to the Beloit Buccaneers in a defensive slugfest at Thorson-Lucken Field.

Augustana held advantages in both shots (32–24) and shots on goal (18–12), but Beloit's defense and timely scoring proved to be the difference in the low-scoring contest. Beloit struck twice in the opening quarter to take an early lead, scoring the game's first goal midway through the period before adding another late in the frame to carry a 2–0 advantage into the second quarter. The Buccaneers extended the lead early in the second quarter, converting a man-down opportunity to make it 3–0 heading into halftime.

Beloit pushed the margin to four early in the third quarter, but the Vikings responded shortly after. Eddie Resendez put Augustana on the board with 12:07 remaining in the third, finishing a pass from Tommy Wimmers to cut the deficit to 4–1.

Later in the quarter, Resendez struck again. The sophomore found space and fired home an unassisted goal with just over two minutes remaining in the period, bringing the Vikings within two and giving Augustana some late momentum heading into the fourth.
Augustana continued to apply pressure in the final quarter, but Beloit added an insurance goal midway through the frame to hold on for the 5–2 victory.

Resendez led the Viking offense with two goals on seven shots, while Wimmers recorded the lone assist. Nik Schaafsma paced the attack with a team-high 16 shots. In goal, Hagan Quigley made seven saves as the Vikings collected 24 ground balls and forced 13 turnovers defensively.

Augustana moves to 3–5 on the season. The Vikings are back in action on March 21 when they travel to Pitt-Bradford. Face-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
