CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings softball team split a doubleheader against the Coe Kohawks on Tuesday. In game one, the Vikings fell 8-3 before outscoring the Kohawks 16-11 in the second game.
Game One
Coe grabbed the early advantage in the bottom of the first with two runs. Augie followed with one in the next inning after
Emma Evans and
Emily Gad reached base on a walk. Both base runners advanced on a groundout, and Evans crossed home plate on another putout to create a 2-1 score. In the bottom of the second, the Kohawks tallied three more to stretch the difference to 5-1.Â
Evans was walked once again at the top of the fourth and stole second. The senior ran home for the second time after
Lilli Burton singled up the middle, moving the game to 5-2. The Vikings added another in the top of the fifth with a solo home run by
Alexis Duke to get within two at 5-3. Coe responded in the sixth with three more runs to take the first game 8-3.Â
Seven Vikings collected hits, with
Aubrey Gradin leading with three, while Burton brought in two runs.
Game Two
In the bottom of the first, Coe gained the early advantage once again with six runs. Augie responded with a one-run home run to center field by
Olivia Osborne to get on the board 6-1. The Kohawks tallied another in the bottom of the second.
Marley Behm sailed one to left center to secure another solo home run for Augie.
Alexis Duke followed with a triple and ran home on a throwing error by Coe to move the game 7-3. The home team put up another run before Augie converted a big inning.
In the top of the fourth, the Vikings scored 10 runs on nine hits.
Addie Garr got the bats moving with a single to right field and advanced on a walk. Both base runners advanced on a single up the middle by Burton, and Garr crossed home plate after Behm singled up the middle. Duke and
A'rion Lonergan hit back-to-back singles to bring runners home and get within two at 8-6. With bases loaded, Gradin shot one deep into right field to bring all four Vikings home and overtake the game 10-8.
Maya Viel and
Emma Schmidt came into the game to run for
Madi Bickell and Garr, who were both hit by pitches. The two ran home after Osborne singled to left field to stretch the game 12-8. Osbrone would later cross home plate after an over throw to second base to close the inning with a score of 13-8.
The Kohawks didn't score until the bottom of the fifth when they grabbed two. Augie followed with two of their own after
Mikaylin Hofer singled and advanced on a walk and a sacrifice bunt. The junior scored off a single, and Osborne, who was walked, slid home on a passed ball to create a 15-10 game. Both teams put up a run, with another home run from Gradin being the score for the Vikings to close the game 16-11.
Nine Vikings earned hits in the win, with Behm leading with three, while Gradin brought five runs home. On the mound, Garr earned the win with four innings pitched, with two strikeouts. Additionally, Hofer pitched three innings with three strikeouts.Â
With the split, Augie moves to 4-9 on the season and will be back in action on April 3 to host Millikin for the Vikings conference opener.Â
