Softball splits day two of spring break

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Augustana Vikings softball team split the second day in Florida with a 10-0 five-inning victory over the Union Garnet Charges before falling to the No. 13 UW-Oshkosh Titans 7-2.

Game One Against Union - 10-0 (W)

The Vikings fired early and never stopped, with Alexis Duke scoring first after being walked. The sophomore rounded the bases and scored after Aubrey Gradin singled to center to gain the early 1-0 lead. After a quick three-up, three-down bottom of the first, Augie put another run on the board. Lilli Burton got the bats going with a double to right-center and scored after Emily Gad hit deep into center to create a 2-0 game.

Both teams remained scoreless until Augustana scored six in the top of the fourth. Mikaylin Hofer singled, and Burton followed with a walk to get runners on first and second. In the next at-bat, Gad sailed another bomb to center to bring both Hofer and Burton home. Emma Schmidt hit a sacrifice bunt to third base to bring Gad home to move the game 5-0. With two runners on, Madi Bickell tallied another three-run home run deep into center field to stretch the gap 8-0.

At the top of the final inning, Emma Evans doubled down the left field line to bring up Addie Gar, who brought Evans home on a single and advanced to second on the throw. Jenna Becker singled to move Garr to third, and a fielder's choice brought her home to seal the 10-0 victory.

Eight Vikings collected hits in the win, with Gad leading with two. Bickell batted three runs in, while Schmidt and Ridgley stole bases. On the mound, Hofer pitched three innings with a strikeout for 17 at-bats, while Garr pitched two innings with four strikeouts in seven at-bats.

Game Two Against No. 13 UW-Oshkosh - 7-2 (L)

Both teams were scoreless until the Titans put up one in the second and added two more in the following inning. Schmidt got the bottom of the fourth going with a single down the left field line and came home after Bickell doubled down the left line to get on the board at 3-1.

The Vikings got within one in the following inning after A'rion Lonergan singled to right and advanced when Burton was walked. The freshman reached third on a wild pitch and came home on a sacrifice bunt by Duke. In the top of the sixth, UW-Oshkosh added two more to their score at 5-2 before closing the game at 7-2 in the seventh.

Four Vikings secured hits in the game, with Lonergan grabbing two.

With the split, Augie moves to 2-4 on the season and will be back in action tomorrow for a solo game against Carleton.
