CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Augustana Vikings dropped two in the opening day of the spring break trip on Sunday. The Vikings fell to the No. 21 DePauw Tigers 9-2 and the George Fox Bruins 11-2 after six innings.
Game One Against DePauw - 9-2 (L)
The Tigers struck first in the bottom of the opening inning with two runs to obtain the lead. In the second,
Emma Evans reached base on a fielder's choice before stealing second on the next at-bat.
Emily Gad followed with a single to second base, which allowed Evans to cross home and get the Vikings on the board with a 2-1 score. In the bottom of the inning, DePauw tallied another run to move the game 3-1.
After three innings, the Tigers scored another run that moved the gap to 4-1. In the top of the sixth,
Aubrey Gradin kicked things off for Augie with a double to center field and moved to third on a groundout in the next at-bat. Evans brought the sophomore home after singling to left field. DePauw followed with five to stretch the claim to the 9-2 victory.
Gradin and Gad led the team with two hits apiece, while Evans and
Lindsay LaVine stole a base.
Game Two Against George Fox - 11-2 (L)
George Fox started strong in the batter's box with three runs in the first inning before scoring another in the following second and third. The Bruins held the Vikings to a goose egg and tallied two more in the top of the fifth to create a 7-0 score.
The Vikings got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with LaVine leading off with a single to second. The freshman rounded the bases on a walk and a single before scoring on a single by Bickell. George Fox responded with four runs in the top of the sixth.
A'rion Lonergan singled to center in the bottom of the inning and advanced on a fielder's choice before scoring after
Alexis Duke doubled down the left field line. The Bruins maintained the upper hand to earn an 11-2 victory.
The Vikings had 10 hits, with
Emma Schmidt and Gradin having two apiece.
With the two losses, Augie moves to 1-3 on the season and will be back in action tomorrow with games against Union and No. 13 UW-Oshkosh.
