Vikings rally falls short against Springfield

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Augustana Vikings baseball team battled the Springfield Pride on Friday afternoon, rallying late but ultimately falling just short in a 5-4 decision in the first of four games at the RussMatt Invitational.

Springfield jumped out in front early, capitalizing on a four-run third inning to seize momentum and the lead. A two-run home run sparked the rally before a two-run double extended the lead, taking advantage of an Augustana error in the frame. The Pride added another run in the fourth to stretch the deficit to 5-0, putting the Vikings in an early hole.

Augustana began to settle in behind the pitching of Jack Buckalew, who provided a strong outing in relief and kept Springfield off the board over his five innings of work. His effort allowed the Vikings to find rhythm offensively and begin chipping away at the deficit.

Charlie Bergin ignited the comeback in the sixth inning, launching a solo home run to get Augustana on the board. Bergin reached base three times and scored twice, continuing to provide a steady presence in the middle of the lineup.

The Vikings continued to apply pressure late, breaking through again in the eighth inning. After working into a favorable situation, Zach Quimby delivered a two-run home run to cut the deficit to two runs. Quimby led the team with two RBIs, while Kaileb Hackman added two hits to support the offensive rally.

Augustana mounted one final rally in the ninth, taking advantage of a Springfield error to bring the tying run to the plate. Ryan Coon came around to score, and Hackman delivered a clutch RBI double to trim the deficit to one. The Vikings loaded the bases in the inning, but the rally stalled just short as Springfield recorded the final out to secure the win.

Chance Carruthers was charged with the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) over three innings, while Buckalew's five-inning relief appearance kept Augustana within striking distance throughout the middle innings.

With the result, Augustana moves to 10-4 on the season and will return to action on March 21 against Framingham State. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
