ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's lacrosse team defeated the Marian Sabres on Saturday by a score of 18-3.
The Vikings set the tone in the opening half, scoring 10 goals while holding Marian to zero. In the opening period,
Jackie McNair scored after 15 seconds of action, after
Madison Langewisch won the opening draw control.
Becca Lacina followed three minutes later with a solo goal to make a 2-0 game. With 11:42 on the clock, McNair started the score stretch with Lacina collecting the assist.
Colleen Chiavola and
Em Dornbusch followed with back-to-back goals straight off the draw control to move the game 5-0. Augie attempted three shots before Langewisch found the back of the net off a pass from Lacina. The Vikings found seven more shot attempts before Langewisch closed the opening period with a successful shot from Dornbusch to move the game 7-0.
In the second, both teams remained scoreless until 10:28, when
Kendall Phelan scored after causing a turnover. Chiavola immediately put up another point for the Vikings, with Lacina earning the assist to move the difference to 9-0. Lacina closed the first half with a solo goal at 6:46 to create a 10-0 score entering the halftime break.
Returning to action, Lacina stayed hot with a successful shot from McNair at 11-0. The Vikings saw two attempts before Lacina finding the back of the net once more, with McNair earning the assist. The Sabres earned their first goal of the game before Langewisch found the back of the net off a pass from
Ariadna Escobar with 51 seconds on the clock to lead 13-1 heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
In the fourth, Chiavola earned a woman-up position goal with Lacina earning the assist. McNair put up another point for Augie in a woman-down situation before Langewisch secured another goal two minutes later. Marian collected another goal with 8:17 on the clock, but Langewisch followed with a goal from Lacina. The Sabres found their last successful shot before McNair closed the game off a pass from Langewisch to seal the 18-3 victory.
Six Vikings scored in the win, with Langewisch leading with five, while McNair and Lacina had four apiece. Lacina also had five assists, while Phelan and Chiavola caused three turnovers. In goal,
Lanie Cecala saved three shots, while
Eva Karjalahti fended off two attempts.
With the win, Augie improves to 6-2 on the season and will be back in action on March 20 to host UW-Eau Claire.
