VERONA, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings women's lacrosse team was handed its first loss of the season after dropping to the Edgewood Eagles on Saturday by a score of 11-7.
The Eagles opened the game with two quick goals to take the early lead after four minutes of play. Edgewood tallied two more four minutes later to stretch the gap to four with 6:18 on the clock. The home team found the back of the net two additional times to close the first period with a score of 6-0. The Vikings attempted four shots in the 15 minutes, with
Jackie McNair obtaining the lone shot on goal.
In the second, Augie got on the board at 13:03 after a caused turnover by
Em Dornbusch and
Madison Langewisch picking up the ground ball and passing it to Anna Davision, who found the back of the net in a woman-up position. The Eagles followed with another 30 seconds later in a woman-down situation to create a 7-1 game. The Vikings scored another goal off a pass by Langewisch with McNair earning the goal. McNair followed with winning the draw control to allow Langewisch to collect her own goal off a pass from
Taylor Ackland to move the game 7-3. Edgewood put up a successful free position shot before Langewisch found the back of the net in a woman-up position with McNair securing the assist. The home team earned the final goal of the half in a woman-up situation to create a 9-4 game entering the halftime break.
Returning to action,
Becca Lacina grabbed her first goal of the game with 11:02 on the clock. Both teams remained scoreless for the remainder of the snowy period. The Vikings saw four shot attempts in the 15 minutes.
Edgewood maintained possession in the fourth and put a successful shot in the back of the net 20 seconds into the period. Lacina won the draw control to give
Colleen Chiavola the ability to secure a goal of her own in a woman-up position. Augie attempted four additional shots in the scoreless eight minutes and held the Eagles to just one before the home team put up another point. With 1:19 on the clock, Langewisch found another successful shot off a pass by Davison to get within four at 11-7.
Langewisch led the team with three goals, two assists, and four ground balls, while McNair won six draw controls and
Kritika Chitnis caused two turnovers. Eva Karjalahti saved two shots in their 30 minutes in goal, while
Lanie Cecala fended off three goals in her 30 minutes in front of the net.
With the loss, Augie moves to 3-1 on the season and will be back in action on March 6 with a trip to Augsburg.
