FOND DU LAC, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team was defeated in the season opener on Friday, falling to the Marian Sabres by a score of 1-0.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie through 45 minutes of action, with Marian outshooting Augie 8-2. Alyssa Mowry fired first after three minutes of play, but the team didn't have another chance until Allison Gibeau attempted a shot at 38 minutes. Sara Schinker stopped four of the Sabres' eight attempts in the first half to help keep Augie deadlocked at 0-0.
In the second, Marian broke the tie with a goal in the 77th minute. The Vikings' defense continued to hold strong and kept the Sabres at bay despite a 7-3 disparity, but could not find the back of the net, as a 1-0 score remained intact through the end. Samira Khobdeh, Ximena Osorio-Rodriguez, and Mary Baker looked at the goal in the second for Augie.
Schinker finished the night with seven saves in her 90 minutes in the net.
