Women's lacrosse defeated in conference opener

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's lacrosse team fell to the Illinois Wesleyan Titans on Wednesday by a score of 19-8. 

The Titans scored seven in the first quarter and left Augie scoreless after the first 15 minutes of play. In the second quarter, Illinois Wesleyan tallied three more goals until Madison Langewisch secured Augie's first goal at 9:12 to make a 10-1 score. The Titans put up two more to create a 12-1 cushion entering halftime. 

Returning to the field, Ariadna Escobar scored her first goal of the season at 8:38 and Jackie McNair found the back of the net two minutes later to cut the deficit to 12-3. The Titans closed the quarter with four goals to grab a 16-3 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes of play. 

The Vikings secured two goals early in the fourth quarter with successful shots by Langewisch and Becca Lacina, but Illinois Wesleyan tallied another. At 6:54, Langewisch notched back-to-back goals to get within 10 at 17-7. The Titans collected another before Lacina scored her second goal at 2:07. Illinois Wesleyan closed the game with a goal with 42 seconds remaining to secure the 19-8 win.

Langewisch led the team with four goals, while Lacina had two and won seven draw controls. Dylon Karjalahti saved five shots and Lanie Cecala stopped three shots in their 30 minutes in goal each.

With the loss, Augie moves to 4-7 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. The Vikings will be back in action on Saturday, April 12 at Carthage.
