Strong pitching leads to shutout victory over Wheaton

CAROL STREAM, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team shut out the Wheaton Thunder on Tuesday by a score of 6-0.

After a scoreless first inning, Augie put up the first run in the top of the second without the benefit of a hit. Daniel Mosele began things with a walk before a hit batter and sac bunt moved him to third. Michael Aragon connected on an RBI groundout to give the Vikings the early 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, Ryan Coon was walked and advanced on a single by Grant Biggins before running home following an Ethan Sosnowski double down the left-field line. The Vikings stretched the game to 3-0 when Biggins scored on a wild pitch and Augie tallied two more after a fielder's choice and throwing error to create a five-run gap. A sacrifice fly by Colton Davis scored the last run to bring a 6-0 lead out of the third. In the bottom of the fourth, Chance Carruthers allowed a hit before striking out five of his next seven batters before rotating off the mound for Brian Fischer, who struck out his first five batters. Wheaton saw just one player reach scoring position through the final six innings and the Vikings completed the 6-0 victory.

Carruthers earned the win on the mound with 5.1 innings pitched with seven strikeouts. Fischer pitched 3.2 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts in relief to earn the save.

With the win, the Vikings improve to 12-10 on the season and 3-3 in conference play. The team returns to non-conference play tomorrow at Knox.
