Baseball secures big win over North Park

MOLINE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team secured an 8-2 victory over the North Park Vikings on Tuesday.

Augie scored first in the opening inning  after Dymitri Kanellakis singled to center field to bring two runs across home plate. In the bottom of the second with bases loaded, Alex Simon scored on a ball hit by Ryan Coon to create a 3-0 lead. In the following inning, Simon singled to the shortstop  and Kanellakis scored on a throwing error in the play to hold a 4-0 advantage. Adam Bendoraitis faced nine batters in the first three innings, striking out six with no hits allowed. 

North Park tallied its first run in the top of the fourth, but Augie followed with three in the fifth. Coon reached base on a walk and advanced on a wild pitch and passed ball before scoring on a sacrifice fly drawn by Charlie Bergin. With bases loaded, Simon stretched the gap to 6-1 after being hit by a pitch. Kanellakis crossed home during the next at bat following another sacrifice fly by Daniel Mosele. Augustana led 7-1 after five innings of action.

In the bottom of the sixth, Riley Hendren doubled to left field and advanced on a wild pitch before scoring on a single by Kaileb Hackman to move the score to 8-1. North Park sent home a run in the ninth, but Addison Southwick closed the game with two strikeouts to secure the 8-2 victory. 

As a team, Augie collected 12 hits, with Hendren, Hackman, Kanellakis, Simon, and Mosele leading with two. Bendoraitis earned the win on the mound after 5.1 innings and eight strikeouts. 

With the win, the Vikings improve to 19-18 on the season and 7-11 in conference play. The team will be back in action on Saturday, May 3 to host Elmhurst for Senior Day.
