MOLINE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team split games against the Elmhurst Bluejays on Saturday. The Vikings secured a 4-2 victory in the first game before falling in game two by a score of 9-8 after 12 innings.
In game one, the Vikings scored first in the bottom of the opening inning after Ryan Coon reached base on a walk and Kaileb Hackman doubled to left center to bring the runner home. Elmhurst responded with two of its own to snatch the 2-1 advantage in the second. In the bottom of the inning, Colton Davis crossed home plate following a sacrifice fly by Alec McGinnis to even the score at two apiece. Daniel Mosele singled to center before scoring after back-to-back singles to secure the one-run lead.
Both teams put up goose eggs until the bottom of the sixth when Alex Simon singled to left field to bring Charlie Bergin home. The Vikings held the Bluejays scoreless the rest of the way to secure the first game 4-2.
Augie collected eight hits in the win, with Mosele leading with two. Zach DeMarlie earned the win on the mound with six innings pitched and two strikeouts. Addison Southwick collected his third save of the season.
In game two, Elmhurst put up a run in the top of the first to obtain the 1-0 upper hand. Both teams displayed zeroesi n the second before Augie scored two in the bottom of the third. McGinnis kicked off the inning with a double to deep right field and advanced on a single hit by Hendren. He later scored on a deep ground out by Coon to even the score at one apiece. Hendren later crossed home plate after Bergin singled to take the slight 2-1 advantage.
In the top of the fourth, the Bluejays put up five to regain the lead with a 6-2 score. In the fifth, Coon doubled to deep right and Hackman followed with a single to bring Coon home. With bases loaded, Davis hit into a fielder's choice to score Hackman on the play to get within two with a 6-4 score.Â
A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back singles from Bergin and Dymitri Kanellakis bringing the lead runners home to tie the game at 6-6. The Vikings snatched the lead in the seventh after runners were on the corner bases due to walks. Coon brought the go-ahead run in after a single to center field to create a 7-6 lead for Augie.
In the top of the ninth, Elmhurst drew the score even at seven apiece to force extra innings before taking the lead again in the 10th. Augie drew even once again in the bottom of the inning. Bergin kicked off the inning with a single, and Carson Vitry entered the game to pinch run. Vitry moved around the bases on a ground out and single before crossing home plate on a sacrifice fly hit by Simon. In the top of the 12th, the Bluejays scored via a passed ball and held the Vikings scoreless in the bottom half to take the second game by a score of 9-8.
As a team, Augie collected 15 hits, with Coon and Bergin leading with two to go with their two runs batted in.Â
With the split record, the Vikings finish the season with a 20-19 record and 8-12 in conference play.Â
