Baseball drops doubleheader against Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Augustana Vikings baseball team dropped both games to the Carthage Firebirds on Saturday with game scores of 10-0 and 6-2.

After a pair of scoreless innings to begin game one, the Firebirds put up two in the bottom of the third and tallied six more in the following inning. Both teams put up goose eggs in the fifth, but Carthage closed the game with two more runs in the sixth to take the first game 10-0 by run rule.

The Vikings collected three hits from Dymitri Kanellakis, Ryan Theile, and Alec McGinnis

In game two, Augie crossed home first in the top of the first after Charlie Bergin singled though the right side to bring Ryan Coon in. Carthage tied the game at one apiece in the bottom of the first.

Theile kicked off the second inning with a double down the right field line before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt drawn by McGinnis. During the next at-bat, Theile scored on a passed ball to regain the lead for the Vikings 2-1.

The Firebirds tied the game in the bottom half once more and tallied another in the third and fourth to stretch their gap to 4-2. Both teams remained scoreless through the following three innings, with Carthage obtaining two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the second game 6-2.

The Vikings collected eight hits, with Kanellakis and Bergin notching two apiece.

With the losses, Augie moves to 18-17 on the season and 6-10 in conference play. The team will be back in action tomorrow for the final game of the three-game series.
