Baseball splits doubleheader vs. Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team split a doubleheader against the Carroll Pioneers on Saturday. The Vikings dropped game one in 10 innings by a score of 6-5 before securing a 12-6 victory in game two.

In game one, Carroll put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to secure the early 2-0 advantage. In the top of the third, Daniel Mosele hit a single to center before advancing on a sacrifice bunt by Cole Green and a fly ball by Riley Hendren. Ryan Coon brought the runner home with a single through the left side to get the team within one.

In the fourth, Hendren tallied another after a single down the left field line to even the game at two apiece. Coon was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Kaileb Hackman, who doubled down the left field line to score three and take the 5-2 advantage.

The Pioneers got within one in the bottom of the sixth before tying the game at 5-5 in the eighth. Augie held Carroll scoreless in the ninth to force extra innings, but the Pioneers crossed home plate in the bottom of the 10th to take the first game 6-5.

The Vikings collected nine hits, with Coon and Alec McGinnis leading with two apiece, while Hackman batted three runs in.

In the second game, Charlie Bergin singled down the left field line to bring Augie's first two runs in to obtain the early lead in the first inning. In the top of the second, Coon doubled up the middle to bring two more runs in before Dymitiri Kanellakis crossed home plate on a ground out in the third to stretch the gap to 5-0.

Carroll put up three runs in the bottom of the fifth before Mosele scored on a throwing error by the Pioneers in the sixth to extend the score to 6-3. In the bottom of the seventh, Carroll evened the game at six apiece, but Hackman followed with a three-RBI double to left center to regain the 9-6 lead in the ensuing at-bat for the Vikings. Kanellakis tallied another run after a single up the middle to create a 10-6 score. Mosele crossed home plate on a wild pitch in the ninth and Coon brought in the final run with a sac fly to double up the home team 12-6.

The Vikings collected 10 hits in the second game, with Hackman and Kanellakis leading with two. Hackman and Coon each batted three runs in, while Addison Southwick earned the win on the mound.

With the split, Augie moves to 17-14 on the season and 6-7 in conference play. The team will return home on Tuesday, April 22 to host the North Central Cardinals.
