MOLINE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team began a three-game series with Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, falling in the opener by a score of 8-5 before winning game two, 17-4.
The Vikings scored early in the first inning of the first game after Riley Hendren doubled to left center and Ryan Coon batted him in with a single to right field. Illinois Wesleyan evened the game in the top of the second with its first run.
In the third, Colton Davis started the inning with a double down the left-field line before Hendren was walked. Both runners scored on the next at-bat via an error by the Titans. Kaileb Hackman followed with a single to right field to bat Coon in and he scored three batters later on a wild pitch to make a 5-1 score. Illinois Wesleyan followed with runs in the fourth and fifth before evening the score at five apiece in the top of the sixth. The Titans took the advantage in the seventh and added two more in the ninth to hang on for the 8-5 victory.
Augie collected nine hits in the opener, with Alec McGinnis and Hackman leading with two apiece.
In game two, Illinois Wesleyan crossed home plate first before the Vikings erupted for seven in their first at-bat opportunity of the contest. The first run came in on a hit-by-pitch prior to back-to-back walks bringing in the following two. Davis singled to left field to get two more across home plate and Coon followed with a two-RBI single to secure the 7-1 lead.
In the fourth, the Titans inched closer with a score, but Augie followed with a six-spot in the bottom half to break the game open. Grant Biggins brought the first two home on a single to center before ground outs by Mosele and Charlie Bergin accounted for the next two. Davis closed the inning with a two-run single to create a 13-2 cushion.
With bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Bergin smoked a grand slam to left-center to increase the gap to 17-2. Illinois Wesleyan obtained two in the seventh, but the Vikings secured the 17-4 victory in seven innings by run rule.
Augie totaled 11 hits, with Hendren and Coon notching two apiece, while Bergin batted six runs in. Ethan McGraw pitched a complete game with two strikeouts.
With the two-game split, the Vikings move to 14-11 on the season and 4-4 in conference play. The team will be in Bloomington tomorrow for the final game of the series.
