BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team dropped the final matchup of the three-game series with Illinois Wesleyan on Sunday by a score of 11-8.
In the first inning, Ryan Coon doubled before Kaileb Hackman reached base on a fielder's choice to bring up Ethan Sosnowski, who singled to left field to bring the lead runner home. With runners on, Charlie Bergin doubled to right center to score both and take the early 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Illinois Wesleyan put up two runs to cut the gap to one.
Hackman moved the margin back out to two in the second after a single to right field brought in Colton Davis. The Titans followed with one of their own in the bottom of the inning before taking the 5-4 upper hand during the third inning.
In the fourth, an error by Illinois Wesleyan drew the score even at five apiece and a sacrifice fly by Daniel Mosele regained the advantage for the Vikings by a score of 6-5. In the top of the fifth, the Vikings crossed home plate on a walk and error to stretch the differential to 8-5. The Titans tallied six runs in the bottom of the fifth to go out in front 11-8. Illinois Wesleyan worked around a bases-loaded situation in the ninth to complete the three-run victory.
Augie totaled 15 hits, with Hendren and Bergin leading with three apiece. Four different players batted two runs in.
With the loss, the Vikings move to 14-12 on the season and 4-5 in conference play. The team will return to Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field on Tuesday, April 15 to host Lawrence in a midweek non-conference battle.
