Baseball conquers Haverford in final game at Gene Cusic Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team secured a 7-4 win in the final game of the Gene Cusic Classic on Sunday against the Haverford Fords.

After a scoreless first inning, Haverford put up the first run in the top of the second to grab the early lead. The Vikings remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when Dymitri Kanellakis doubled to right field to bring two runs in to snatch a 2-1 advantage. The Fords evened the score in the next inning at two apiece. In the fifth, Kanellakis singled to tally another point before a home run by Kaileb Hackman brought both home to lead by three.

Augie's scoring streak continued in the bottom of the seventh when Kanellakis singled to get on base before a double by Hackman moved him to third and he scored on a walk. Hackman then crossed home plate on a wild pitch for the team's final tally of the game. Haverford added two in the eighth but a three-up, three-down last inning secured the three-run win for the Vikings.

As a team, Augie notched seven hits with Kanellakis leading with three to go with his three runs batted in. Chance Carruthers earned the win on the mound after 6.1 innings and three strikeouts. Ethan McGraw obtained the save after 2.2 innings pitched with four strikeouts.

With the win, the Vikings move to 4-4 on the season and will return to the Midwest to battle Division I Iowa on Tuesday, March 11.
