Women’s lacrosse defeated by Albion in high-scoring battle

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's lacrosse team dropped a high-scoring game to the Albion Britons on Saturday with a final score of 21-15. 

Albion secured the first six goals in the first quarter before Madison Langewisch stopped the run with a strike at 4:38. The Britons tallied another, but with a minute remaining Becca Lacina and Langewisch collected successful shots to make a 7-3 score. Albion closed the quarter with a goal with two seconds left to move the score to 8-3 after 15 minutes of play.

In the second quarter, the Britons obtained three in the first five minutes of action. At 7:43, Elena Bechard put up her first goal with Langewisch notching the assist. Albion scored two more before Langewisch secured her second of the day off of a pass from Lacina to bring the team within 13-5 heading into halftime. 

Returning to the field, Augie grabbed two goals in the first five minutes with successful shots by Kritika Chitnis and Bechard. The Britons then added four consecutive points to create a 10-point game. At 5:15, Kyla Painter found the back of the next in a woman-up position to get within single digits, and Bechard followed with another goal with Langewisch notching the assist. Langewisch closed the quarter with a successful shot from Lacina, but Albion led 18-10 entering the fourth.

In the first possession of the fourth quarter, Bechard tallied another point for the Vikings, but the Britons grabbed another two minutes later. Lacina secured a successful shot from a pass from Langewisch but Albion then followed with two. At 6:19, Langewisch obtained back-to-back goals to create a 21-14 score. Bechard tallied the final goal of the contest in a woman-up position to conclude the game 21-15. 

Langewisch led the Vikings on the day with six goals, while Bechard followed close behind with five. Lacina had five assists and Langewisch won nine draw controls to hit a career record of 200 draw wins. Bechard picked up four ground balls to collect a career record of 100 ground balls and Rachel Wylie caused four turnovers.

With the loss, the Vikings move to 4-4 on the season and will be back in action on March 25-26 for their spring break trip in Sewanee, Tenn.
