McGinnis homers twice in Vikings' win over St. Olaf

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Alec McGinnis hit a pair of home runs and Zach DeMarlie pitched a complete-game shutout as the Augustana Vikings baseball team opened the 2025 RussMatt Invitational with a 10-0 win over the St. Olaf Oles.

After a pair of scoreless innings both ways, McGinnis got the Vikings on the board with a solo shot in the bottom of the third. Another scoreless frame ensued before McGinnis made it two home runs in as many at-bats to double the Augie advantage out to 2-0 after five complete. The run came after St. Olaf saw its best scoring threat of the afternoon in the top half of the fifth, stranding runners on second and third with just one out after DeMarlie induced back-to-back pop ups.

Augustana broke things open in the seventh with three more runs. Following a pair of walks to begin the inning, McGinnis grabbed his third RBI of the game with a double to right-center field. Two straight wild pitches accounted for the next two tallies for the Vikings as they brought a 5-0 lead into the eighth.

Kaileb Hackman began a big eighth inning for the Vikings with a leadoff walk and later came in to score on a Grant Biggins pinch-hit single. Cole Green notched an RBI hit up the middle to give Augie its seventh run prior to a two-run double from Michael Aragon to stretch the margin to nine. A run-scoring hit from Riley Hendren walked off the Oles and ended the game with 10-0 final.

As a team, the Vikings collected 11 hits, led by McGinnis' 3-4 effort. DeMarlie earned his second win of the season on the mound after allowing just two hits.

With the win, Augustana improves to 8-4 on the season and will take on Ramapo tomorrow morning.
