MOLINE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team secured a 5-4 win against the Dubuque Spartans on Tuesday.
The Vikings struck first in the bottom of the opening inning with Kaileb Hackman batting in two after a double down the left-field line to secure the early lead. Augie tallied two more in the following inning, beginning with Ryan Coon crossing home on a Riley Hendren double to left field. Dymitri Kanellakis' single up the middle during the next at-bat brought in Hendren to stretch the margin to 4-0.
In the top of the third, Dubuque put up two of its own and added another in the fourth inning to inch within a single run. The Spartans found the equalizer in the fifth, but in the bottom half the Vikings got it back to go out in front. Hendren reached base after being hit by a pitch before stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly from Kanellakis sent Hendren in to put the lead back in Augie's favor. Both teams remained scoreless for the remaining four innings, which included Augie getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth, to conclude the game at 5-4.
Four players contributed to Augustana's four hits with Kanellakis and Hackman each batting two runs in. Cameron Miller earned the win on the mound after pitching five innings with five strikeouts.
With the win, Augie moves to 7-4 on the season and will travel to Winter Haven, Fla. for the RussMatt Invitational on March 21-25.
