ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's lacrosse team secured a 15-13 victory over the UW-Stevens Point Pointers on Saturday.
In a big first quarter, the Vikings out-scored the Pointers 4-0 for the early advantage. Jackie McNair secured the first goal for Augie at 11:35 before Elena Bechard found the back of the net off a pass from Madison Langewisch two minutes later. Quickly off the draw, Bechard notched another before Langewisch grabbed one of her own in a woman-up situation. The Vikings held UW-Stevens Point scoreless through the first 15 minutes of play to lead 4-0 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, the Pointers scored three in the first five minutes of action to get within one, but Langewisch put up another point for the Vikings to stretch the gap back to two. UW-Stevens Point followed with two more within four seconds of each other to even the game at five apiece. At 4:26, Alex Masterson found a successful shot attempt off a pass from Langewisch to regain the lead at 6-5. With under a minute remaining, Colleen Chiavola collected a goal before a free-position shot by Langewisch went in with eight seconds to go. Augustana led 8-5 at the halftime break.
Returning to the field, the Pointers scored first but Bechard followed with back-to-back strikes to stretch the lead out to four. UW-Stevens Point tallied another, but was countered with Bechard's fifth goal of the day. The Pointers followed with three consecutive points and both teams remained scoreless in the final four minutes of play to create an 11-10 score entering the final quarter.
In the first minutes of the fourth quarter, both teams put up goals, with Augie's coming from Langewisch in a woman-down situation. The Vikings created separation after McNair found the back of the net in a woman-up advantage, but the visitors got back within one around the nine-minute mark. The two-point margin was quickly restored after Langewisch collected a woman-up strike and Chiavola's goal with 1:20 to go all but sealed the two-point win for Augustana.
Bechard and Langewisch led the team with five goals each, while Langewisch also added two assists. Kendall Phelan caused six turnovers and Langewisch won seven draw controls. Lanie Cecala earned the win in goal with seven saves.
