Baseball defeats Buena Vista for second win of Augustana Invitational

MOLINE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team earned its second win in as many days on Saturday, defeating the Buena Vista Beavers by a score of 5-1.

Buena Vista got the scoring started with an RBI triple in the top of the first inning, but the Vikings responded in bottom half of the inning, notching two runs thanks to an RBI groundout by Kaileb Hackman and a run-scoring single from Daniel Mosele.

With Augustana up 2-1, starting pitcher Ethan McGraw went to work, not allowing another run for the Beavers the remainder of his time on the mound. The freshman went six innings and secured seven strikeouts, both his highs for the season, and only allowed one walk.

One inning removed from scoring their first two runs, the Vikings quickly added on in the bottom of the second. Following a one-out triple from Alec McGinnis, Riley Hendren stepped up to the plate and roped a double before being brought around to score by a Dymitri Kanellakis single up the middle.

In the fourth inning, the Vikings tacked on their final run of the game after Coon reached by a hit by pitch and Hendren brought in his second RBI of the night with a triple to right-center. Brian Fischer was brought in to begin the seventh and finished out the final three innings with a total of three strikeouts, two hits, and one walk.

As a team, Augustana tallied 11 hits, three of which being extra bases. Hendren led the team with three, while McGinnis snagged two of his own. McGraw grabbed the win, with Fischer securing the save with his three innings of work.

Following the victory, the Vikings move to 6-4 and will be back in action tomorrow for day three of the Augustana Invitational against the Dominican Stars at 2 p.m.
