Men’s volleyball cruises past Rockford

ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's volleyball team swept the Rockford Regents on Sunday, winning the match with set scores of 29-27, 25-17, and 25-16. 

In the first set, the Vikings secured the early lead after back-to-back attack errors by Rockford and a kill by Tom Lamb. A 6-1 run by Augie doubled the advantage with a score of 12-6, but the Regents later evened the score at 18-18 before taking a three-point lead at 23-20. Augie answered with a 3-0 run to even the game back up and the two teams traded points until the Vikings secured the first set 29-27 following kills from Colin Schaefer and Sean Carlson

Augie grabbed the advantage early in the second set after a 5-2 run before three consecutive points from Rockford evened the score at six apiece. The Vikings moved the gap to four after kills by Cole Clarke and Carlson and back-to-back attack errors by the Regents to make it a 10-6 score. Augustana obtained their largest lead of nine following a six-point run to move the game 21-12. Zach Moreano closed the set with a kill to seal the eight-point win.

In the third set, the Vikings once again saw the first lead after a 5-2 scoring spurt and moved the gap to as many as eight after six consecutive points. Augie's cushion reached 13 later on with a seven-point run to make an 18-5 score. An error by Rockford allowed the Vikings to see their largest lead of 14 before six consecutive points got the Regents got them within eight. A kill by Bill Unyi from Micah Reaban capped off the nine-point win. 

As a team, Augie hit .266 percent, while holding Rockford to .120 percent. Carlson led the team with 13 kills, while Schaefer notched 30 assists and nine digs. Lamb and Clarke blocked three attempts apiece and Carlson had three service aces. 

With the win, the Vikings move to 7-3 on the season and will be back in action on Tuesday, February 11 to battle St. Ambrose.
