Men’s volleyball defeats St. Ambrose

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings men's volleyball team defeated the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees on Tuesday in four sets with scores of 25-22, 25-27, 24-26, and 25-18. 

Augie opened the first set with back-to-back points after a kill by Zach Moreano and an attack error by St. Ambrose. A block by Sean Carlson and Tom Lamb closed off a three-point run to move the difference to four with an 8-4 score. The Bees converted a 5-2 run to even the score at 10-10 and both teams drew even 11 additional times. Consecutive kills from Carlson and an attack error by St. Ambrose moved Augie's gap to three with a 24-21 game. The Vikings secured the first set by three points after a kill by Carlson with a pass from Max Sellers

In the second set, Augie grabbed the advantage early after a 5-2 run and moved the gap to eight following a kill by Ben Schultz to make a 14-6 score. The Vikings stretched the gap to double-digits with a four-point run to move the game to 19-9. A kill by Cole Clarke concluded the second set with an eight-point victory for Augie to lead 2-0 in the match. St. Ambrose bounced back with a 26-24 victory in the third to extend the contest.

The Bees snatched the lead at the start of the fourth set before a five-point run from Augie moved the Vikings out in front 9-6. Both teams tied three times moving forward, but another five consecutive points put Augie back on top 16-11. Augustana closed out the fourth set with three straight points, seeing a kill by Lamb and back-to-back service aces by Carlson to seal the match victory.

As a team, the Vikings hit .287 percent, while holding the Bees to .148 percent. Carlson led with 18 kills, while Colin Schaefer notched 45 assists and Sellers had 10 digs. 

With the win, Augie moves to 8-3 on the season and heads north on Saturday, February 15 to battle Marian and Mount St. Joseph in Fond du Lac, Wis.
