Women’s lacrosse rallies to defeat MSOE in home opener

ROCK ISLAND --  The Augustana Vikings women's lacrosse team erased a four-goal deficit on Wednesday to defeat the MSOE Raiders by a score of 10-6.

The Vikings got on the board first just 35 seconds into the game with a shot from Becca Lacina to clinch the early lead. MSOE followed with two of its own and both teams remained scoreless for the remaining five minutes of the first quarter to result in a 2-1 score after 15 minutes of play.

In the second, the Raiders added three more to obtain a 5-1 advantage. With three minutes remaining in the half, Kritika Chitnis notched her first collegiate goal in a woman-up situation. Colleen Chiavola followed with back-to-back tallies to get within one and the Vikings trailed by just a point at 5-4 entering halftime. 

Returning to the field, Augie evened the score at five apiece after Elena Bechard notched a goal on a pass from Madison Langewisch at 11:14. A free position shot by Kyla Painter claimed the lead back for the Vikings, while the team MSOE scoreless in the quarter to bring a 6-5 advantage into the final period. 

In the fourth quarter, Bechard secured her second goal of the night after a pass from Jackie McNair at 12:46 to move the gap to two. In a woman-up free position attempt, MSOE scored its lone goal of the second half to make it a 7-6 game. Bechard secured consecutive goals off of assists from Anna Erickson and Langewisch to move the difference to three before Langewisch closed the quarter with a strike to bring the game to its final score of 10-6.  

As a team, Augie held MSOE to just one goal in the final 37 minutes of game time. Dylon Karjalahti earned the win in net after making six saves. Bechard led with four goals on the night, while Erickson notched three assists and Langewisch won six draw controls. 

With the win, Augie moves to 1-1 on the season and will stay at Thorson-Lucken Field to battle Hamline on Saturday, March 1.
