Men's soccer battle to the end, falls to Illinois Wesleyan

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana Vikings men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2–1 contest to the Illinois Wesleyan Titans on Wednesday night at Thorson-Lucken Field.

Illinois Wesleyan broke through first in the opening half, scoring in the 11th minute to take a 1–0 advantage. The Vikings created several opportunities to respond, with shots on goal from Ismail Bennani and Jon-Philip Tiller forcing key saves from Titan goalkeeper Sam Kedzior. Augustana goalkeeper Willliam Gabrielsson kept the deficit at one entering halftime with multiple stops, including an assist from the crossbar in the 13th minute.

The Vikings found the equalizer just after the break. In the 47th minute, Javi Landin threaded a perfect pass through traffic to Toby Dottin, who buried his shot into the upper corner to even the score at 1–1. Augustana maintained pressure through the early stages of the second half with a presence across midline.

Illinois Wesleyan reclaimed the lead in the 67th minute and held off a late push from Augustana despite multiple chances in the closing minutes. Dottin and Landin combined for the Vikings' lone goal, while Bennani and Tiller each recorded a shot on frame. Gabrielsson tallied six saves on nine shot on goal with the Titans totalling 20 shots. Nico Linaje, Diego San Pedro, and Hakim Hakkou all turned in 90-minute nights.

With the result, Augustana moves to 3–7–3 overall and 1–4-1 in CCIW play. The Vikings will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 22, traveling to face the Carthage Firebirds.
