Women's soccer sends in late goal to seal draw with Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team sent in a goal with six minutes remaining in the game on Wednesday to pull even and earn a draw with the Illinois College Lady Blue.

The two teams saw a defensive battle through the first 45 minutes of action and took a scoreless tie into the halftime break. Augie held an advantage in the shots category, doubling up Illinois College 4-2 in the frame. Two of the four strikes were on target.

In the second, the Lady Blue were the first to strike, breaking the deadlock with a tally just six minutes in. From there, the two teams traded scoring opportunities, with the Vikings putting up a total of 11 shots in just the final 45 minutes. With 15 minutes remaining, the Vikings rattled off five straight shots over the span of eight minutes, with the final resulting in an equalizing goal in the 84th minute. After receiving the ball on the far right side deep in Lady Blue territory, Alex Locke sent a cross to the opposite side of the field and was driven into the back of the net by Giorgia Felicita to pull the Vikings even. The Augie defense fended off a last-second threat from Illinois College that saw a shot as time expired to walk away with the 1-1 tie.

Augustana out-shot Illinois College 15-7 in the game, with seven of those coming on target. Liesl Whitener led the way with 10 looks at the net, five of which were on target.

With the result, the Vikings sit at 1-0-1 on the season. The team will be back in action on September 11 at Coe.
