Women's soccer edges Coe on the road

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team picked up a non-conference road victory over the Coe Kohawks on Wednesday by a score of 2-1.

Liesl Whitener quickly put the Vikings on the board before the 10-minute mark with her second strike of the season. Her goal was one of four shots from Augie in the first 45 minutes of action and the lone on target. Coe found the equalizer shortly before the intermission, sending one into the back of the net in the 38th minute to make it a 1-1 game at halftime. Both teams mustered just the one attempt on goal in the first half, each resulting in a tally.

Nearly 30 minutes of scoreless play went by to begin the second half with each team posting just one shot on target during that span. In the 75th minute, Whitener sent a ball towards the goal from a free kick and Samira Khobdeh pushed it by the right side of the goalie to break the deadlock and give the Vikings a 2-1 advantage. The Kohawks saw two shots in the final four minutes of action, but neither were on the mark as Augie held on for the one-goal victory.

Both teams finished the game with seven shots apiece, while Augie was led by Whitener's four. Mary Pietras earned the win in net for Augustana.

With the win, the Vikings improve to 2-0-1 on the season. The team will be back in action Saturday at Lakeland.
