PELLA, Iowa -- The Augustana Vikings men's soccer team defeated the Central Dutch on Wednesday by a final score of 4-1 to earn its third straight win.
"It was a great team effort all around," said head coach Chad Flanders. "We used our team speed to have counter attack after counter attack to score our goals."
The Vikings' offense started strong with Rayane Haidi attempting a shot early in action before securing his first goal of the season in the 14th minute off a pass from Jimmie Kucaba. About 10 minutes later, Gonzalo Alberola notched his first collegiate goal on a pass from Patrick Mayer to move the gap to two points. Both teams attempted five shots in the first half, with Augustana leading 2-0 after 45 minutes of action.
Returning from the halftime break, Haidi quickly expanded the advantage in the 52nd minute from a pass by Ismail Bennani before collecting an unassisted goal 16 minutes later to make a 4-0 score and secure the hat trick. Central got on the board with 15 minutes remaining, but the Vikings held on for the three-goal victory. The Dutch outshot Augie 13-9, but had just four on goal. Ignacio Alberola saved two of the four on goal in his 79 minutes of play.
With the win, Augie moves to 3-1-1 on the season and will be back in action on Saturday, September 28 to open conference action on the road against No. 25 North Park.
