ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Augustana Vikings conquered the Fontbonne Griffins on Saturday by a score of 3-2.
The Vikings were first to get on the scoreboard after attempting five shots. Derek Dedume notched the first tally of the day in the 19th minute on a pass from Gonzalo Alberola. The Griffins evened the score with nine minutes left in the half, but Toby Dottin put Augie back on top three minutes later on an assist from Alex Sanchez Collado. Augustana led 2-1 after 45 minutes of action.
Returning from the halftime break, Carlos Fernandez quickly extended the advantage to two with his first goal of the year on another assist by Alberloa. Fontbonne followed with a converted penalty shot to make the score 3-2 with less than 30 minutes remaining. Both teams remained scoreless to close the matchup with a final score of 3-2. Augie outshot the Griffins 21-6, with 12 being on goal.
Dedume, Fernandez, and Alberola each had two shots on goal to lead the offensive charge. Ignacio Alberola saved three of the Griffins' five shots on goal in his 90 minutes of play.
With the win, Augie moves to 2-1-1 on the season, good for its best start through four games since 2013. Augie will remain on the road to battle Central on Wednesday, September 18.
