ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team earned a shutout victory in its home opener on Friday, defeating the visiting Concordia-Chicago Cougars by a score of 4-0.
It did not take long for the Vikings to get on the board as returning All-CCIW selection
Liesl Whitener tallied a score in just the third minute to give Augie the lead. The Vikings scored twice more in the opening half, notching their second on a long strike by
Jordyn Swanson in the 19th minute.
Alyssa Mowry rounded out an explosive first half with an unassisted tally in the final 10 minutes to put Augie out in front 3-0 at the halftime break.
Sara Schinker stopped two saves in goal in the first half in her first game in an Augustana uniform.
The two teams played just over a half hour or scoreless action to begin the second half, but the Vikings found the back of the net once more in the 77th minute. Swanson sent a middle ball from the left side that was deflected by
Ximena Osorio-Rodriguez to set up
Mary Baker's first collegiate goal. Augie out-shot Concordia 9-2 in each of the two halves and
Mary Pietras boasted a scoreless effort in net in the second to complete the 4-0 win for the Vikings.
Five different different players had multiple shot attempts for Augustana, with Whitener leading the way four.
Augie improves to 1-0 on the season and will return to action on Wednesday to battle Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill.
