ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings men's soccer team dropped the 2024 season opener against the Simpson Storm on Friday by a score of 3-0.
Both teams put up a defensive battle in the first half with Augie fending off six of the seven shots by Simpson. On the Vikings' offensive side, the team attempted three shots coming from Sergio Cano Minguet, Fer Cuahquentzi, and Alex Sanchez Collado. The Storm tallied their first goal after 17 minutes of action to take a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Returning to the field, Augie attempted five more shots in the remaining 45 minutes of action. The first shot came from Daniels Vasiljevs before Jackson Binder, Caleb Hass, and Toby Dottin attempted a strike of their own. Simpson put up two more tallies in the second half to create a final score of 3-0.
Ignacio Alberola saved six shots in his 75 minutes on the field.
With the loss, Augie moves to 0-1 on the season and will be back in action on Sunday, September 1 to face Carleton in Northfield, Minn.
