Men's soccer 2023 season review

6/28/2024 9:45:00 AM

The Augustana Vikings men's soccer team endured a challenging season in 2023, but saw vast improvement throughout the year under first-year head coach Chad Flanders

After a rocky start, Augie battled to a pair of consecutive draws against Illinois College and Fontbonne in mid-September. Against the Blueboys of Illinois College, the Vikings fended off 19 shots from their opponent and fought to a scoreless tie despite a -15 shot disparity. In their tie with Fontbonne, Augie saw a season-high 12 shots, but once again earned a 0-0 deadlock.

The Vikings faced an 11-game offensive drought until Ben Statz scored the first goal of the 2023 season in the game against Elmhurst. Three games later, Derek Dedume collected a season-high of two goals in a close battle against Carroll. Ignacio Alberola notched a season-best 11 saves in the season finale against the nationally-ranked North Central Cardinals. He finished the year with 30 stops in net. The Vikings concluded their season with an overall record of 0-14-2.

In November, Daniele Meloni was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team and Patrick Mayer earned the CCIW RESPECT Award for Augustana.
