CHICAGO, Ill, -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team scored four runs in the ninth and eventually held on to defeat the North Central Cardinals on Wednesday to advance in the CCIW Tournament.
The Vikings were first on the board in the first inning after Dymitri Kanellakis hit into a fielder's choice and an error by the Cardinals brought two runs home. North Central followed with two of their own in the bottom of the first to even the score before securing the 3-2 advantage in the third inning.Â
Augustana reclaimed the lead with a two-run frame in the top of the fourth, beginning with a run-scoring bunt single by Alec McGinnis prior to an RBI groundout from Cole Green. The Cardinals drew the score even an additional time in the bottom of the sixth and tallied another in the eighth to grab a 5-4 advantage.Â
Trailing by a run, Heath Perry began an eventful ninth inning for the Vikings with a leadoff walk and was followed by an Alex Simon hit-by-pitch two batters later. Down to their last strike, Grant Biggins connected on a Grant Biggins single to right field to bring in the equalizing run. A walk ensued to load the bases before Kannon Perry drew a free pass to bring in the go-ahead score. Charlie Bergin's double contributed another pair of tallies and Augustana brought an 8-5 lead into the bottom half.
The Cardinals saw two walks to begin the bottom half, setting up two on with two outs. A two-run single to the fence inched North Central within a run and later added two to the base pads to set up a bases-loaded situation. Addison Southwick entered the game to face the final batter, forcing a fielder's choice groundout to end the game.Â
Biggins led the Vikings with three hits, while Bergin batted two runs in. Cameron Miller earned the win on the mound before Southwick secured the save.
With the win, the Vikings improve to 25-15 on the season and now enter the double-elimination portion of the CCIW Tournament. The team will be back in action tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. to take on the Millikin Big Blue. The live stream can be viewed
