MOLINE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team swept the Carthage Firebirds on Saturday by scores of 5-4 and 4-2.
The Vikings came back in extra innings to take the first game by a score of 5-4. The Firebirds got on the board first in the top of the third and followed with two more in the fourth inning. Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the seventh when Carthage tallied another before Augie put up a run of their own in the eighth inning after Dymitri Kanellakis hit into a fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the ninth, Daniel Mosele tripled to left-center with two outs and the bases loaded to tie the game at 4-4 and force extra innings. Heath Perry collected his career collegiate hit to right-center in the 10th inning to bring home the winning run.
Alex Simon and Grant Biggin led with two hits a piece, while Mosele batted three runs in. Anthony Sus earned the win on the mound with three innings pitched and six strikeouts.Â
In the second game, the Vikings got on the board first after a sacrifice fly from Colton Davis and a Charlie Bergin double gave Augie a 2-0 lead after one inning of play. The Firebirds evened the score in the top of the fourth, but a single from Bergin put the Vikings back on top in the ensuing at-bat. Augie tallied another in the eighth inning after an error by the Firebirds to take the second game by a score of 4-2.
Biggins, Bergin, and Perry led the Vikings with two hits apiece, while Bergin batted two runs in. Riley Fuller earned the win on the mound with five scoreless innings of relief.Â
With the two wins, Augie improves to 23-15 on the season and 10-10 in conference play. The Vikings will be the No. 5 seed in the upcoming CCIW Tournament and face No. 4 seeded North Central on Wednesday in a single elimination game.
