MOLINE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team defeated the Carroll Pioneers on Friday night by a score of 4-3 to clinch a spot in the upcoming CCIW Tournament.
Augie was first to obtain a run in the bottom of the first after Ethan Sosnowski hit a fielder's choice to take the early 1-0 lead. In the following inning, Cole Green batted a run off of a ground out to put the Vikings up 2-0. Both teams remained scoreless until Augie sent home another in the bottom of the fifth following a sacrifice fly from Daniel Mosele. In the sixth, Charlie Bergin hit into a fielder's choice to bring in the Vikings' fourth run of the night. The Pioneers collected three runs in the eighth and ninth innings, but Augie held on for the 4-3 win.
Bergin led the Vikings in the win with two hits, while Mosele, Bergin, and Cole Green each brought a run in. Adam Bendoritis earned the win on the mound with five innings pitched and six strikeouts and Anthony Sus secured the save with 1.2 innings pitched and a strikeout.Â
With the win, Augie moves to 22-15 on the season and 8-10 in conference play. The Vikings will return to action tomorrow for a doubleheader against the Carthage Firebirds scheduled for 12 p.m.
