MOLINE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team defeated the Monmouth Fighting Scots on Tuesday by a score of 13-8.
The Scots were first on the board with three runs in the top of the fourth, but Augie quickly responded with four of their own in the bottom half. An error by Monmouth brought home the first two runs for the Vikings before Alec McGinnis drove in two after a single to right field to secure a 4-3 advantage after the first inning.Â
In the second, Augie secured its second straight four-run frame, beginning with an RBI single by Grant Biggins before Ethan Sosnowski singled to center field to tally another. Daniel Mosele allowed one to cross home plate after a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly by Colton Davis closed out the inning with the Vikings up 8-3.
Both teams remained scoreless in the third, but the Scots put up five in the fourth to even the score at 8-8. Sosnowski kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the fourth after a single and an error put him on third base and brought in a run to regain the lead. A sacrifice fly from Mosele sent in another to make a 10-8 score. In the sixth inning, Mosele batted in the only run of the inning after a single to left field to extend the margin out to three.
In the eighth inning, Grant Biggins scored off of a wild pitch and McGinnis brought in the last run of the game after a sacrifice bunt to take the non-conference game by a score of 13-8.
Sosnowski led the Vikings in the win with two hits, while Mosele and McGinnis batted three runs apiece. Addison Southwick earned the win on the mound with 1.2 innings pitched and Riley Fuller secured the save with four innings pitched and seven strikeouts.
With the win, Augie improves to 21-15 on the season. The Vikings will return to conference play on Friday for a single game against Carroll at Swanson Stadium/ Brunner Field.Â
