ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's lacrosse team defeated the Elmhurst Bluejays on Wednesday by a score of 14-10.
The Bluejays were first to get on the board nine seconds in before Narita Lambert evened the score at one just over three minutes later. Elmhurst snatched another, but a goal by Anna Erickson tied the score, with Lambert following with another goal in a woman-up position to take the 3-2 lead. The Bluejays obtained another, but the Vikings closed the period with goals from Elena Bechard and Madison Langewisch 12 seconds later to take a 5-3 advantage after 15 minutes of play.
Colleen Chiavola kicked off the second period with her first goal of the night before Elmhurst notched its first of the period. Langewisch tallied her second strike on an assist from Anna Davison to stretch the margin back out to three, while Anna Erickson countered a Bluejays goal with the final point of the half to move Augie's lead to 8-5 at the break.
In the third, Augie posted a 5-0 advantage to extend its lead out to eight heading into the final period. Langewisch accounted for the first four of the period, which included two coming off passes from Davison and Erickson. Taylor Ackland expanded the score to 13-5 with a goal from Davison to close out the quarter.
In the final 15 minutes of action, the Bluejays inched closer and pulled within three after scoring the first five goals of the frame, but Langewisch halted the momentum with the game's final goal to complete the 14-10 win.
Langewisch led the Vikings in the win with seven goals, which is tied for fifth most in a game in Augustana history. Davison had two assists, while Lambert and Chiavola led with nine ground balls. Bechard caused five turnovers and Lambert won four draw controls. Lanie Cecala earned the win in net after securing nine saves.
As a team, the Vikings picked up 59 ground balls, which sets a program record for most in a single game.
With the win, Augie improves to 2-7 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. The Vikings will be back in action on Saturday, April 13 for Senior Night against the Carthage Firebirds.
