Men's lacrosse tallies most goals since 2019, cruises to win over Mount St. Joseph

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Augustana Vikings men's lacrosse team rolled to a road victory over the Mount St. Joseph Lions by a score of 24-2. The 24 goals are the most since the 2019 season for Augie and ties the second-most ever scored in a game in program history.

Augustana scored the game's first five tallies, beginning with an unassisted strike by Tommy Wimmers six minutes in. Jack Connolly added another less than 50 seconds later before Brady Holtz notched back-to-back goals to extend the margin to four. Jake Moore capped off a big opening quarter with a score with 2:48 remaining to help lead the Vikings to a 5-1 lead through 15 minutes of action.

The team answered with another five-spot in the second, seeing five tallies on five assists. Moore and Connolly each secured their second goal of the game through the first five minutes, followed by scores from Carson Ghys and Holtz within seconds of one another. Moore grabbed the final points of the first half to bring Augie's advantage to 10-1 at halftime.

The Vikings came out of the break with a monster frame in the third, scoring 10 times and holding the Lions to just a single point. Augie saw goals from familiar players to start off the second half as Moore, Ghys, and Connolly all added to their total for the game. Elijah Graesser and Tommy Kopman also found the scoring column in the period, while Holtz and Moore account for multiple tallies. Wimmers also found his second strike of the game to help lead to the double-digit scoring output for the Vikings. Augie added four more in the fourth to complete the 24-2 win. Wyatt Dosek found the back of the net in the quarter for his first goal of the season.

As a team, the Vikings finished with multiple top-ten efforts, including a program-high 81 shots in the win. The team also had 17 assists, good for fourth-most in the record book, and 27 faceoffs won, the second-most all-time. Holtz led all scorers with six goals, followed by Moore with five and Connolly with four. Ghys and Connolly also contributed three assists each, while Trevor Herman and Eddie Resendez combined 27-30 in faceoffs. Herman also added 10 ground balls. Defensively, the Vikings caused 13 turnovers, led by Ethan Shap's three.

With the win, Augustana improves to 3-5 on the season. The team will be back in action on April 3 at St. Ambrose.
