Baseball splits CCIW opener with Elmhurst

MOLINE, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team started conference play on Saturday, splitting games against the Elmhurst Bluejays by scores of 12-7 and 8-0.

Elmhurst took the first game by a score of 12-7. In the first inning, Elmhurst collected eight runs, only two of which were earned, but Augie followed with two of their own in the bottom half. Dymitiri Kanellakis batted one home after a sacrifice fly before Grant Biggins singled to make it an 8-2 game.

Neither team added a tally to the board until the sixth and seventh innings, where both teams secured one in each of the frames. A sacrifice fly from Daniel Mosele in the sixth brought in the Vikings' third run, followed by Colton Davis' single to get another runner across home plate. Elmhurst led 10-4 after seven complete.

The Bluejays notched two more in the eighth, but the Vikings attempted a late rally with runs in the bottom half. Davis, Alec McGinnis, and Cole Green all secured run-scoring hits in the frame, but the Bluejays eventually closed the door with a 12-7 final.

Davis led the Vikings with three hits and two runs batted in. Anthony Sus struck out eight in 4.1 innings of relief.

Augie took the second game by a score of 8-0, scoring its first run in the third inning after a sacrifice fly from Kanellakis to grab the early advantage. An error by Elmhurst in the fifth inning brought in the second run for the Vikings. Augie tallied three more in the sixth after Ethan Sosnowski homered and Kanellakis doubled to bring two home to make it a 5-0 score.

In the seventh inning, Augie added another pair of runs with an RBI single by Charlie Bergin before Sosnowski ran home after a fielder's choice. Kanellakis closed out the night with the Vikings' eighth tally after advancing on a groundout to conclude the second game with an 8-0 final score.

The Vikings had six individuals collect a pair of hits, with Kanellakis batting three runs in. Chance Carruthers earned the win with 11 strikeouts in six innings, while Addison Southwick notched the save after three innings with two strikeouts and no hits.

With the split, Augie moves to 14-6 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. Augie will head to Elmhurst tomorrow for the final game of the series at 3 p.m.
