AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Augustana Vikings baseball team wrapped up its stay at the RussMatt Invitational on Tuesday, defeating the No. 21 ranked Kalamazoo Hornets by a score of 4-2.
After a scoreless opening inning, the Hornets scratched two unearned runs across in the bottom half of the second.
Dymitri Kanellakis brought the Vikings within one two innings later, securing his second home run of the Florida trip with a shot over the left-field fence.
Riley Fuller began another scoring rally in the fifth with a leadoff walk, later coming around to score on an RBI double from
Daniel Mosele to even the game at 2-2. A pair of run-scoring singles by
Colton Davis and
Michael Aragon in the sixth put Augie out in front at 4-2 for good. Kalamazoo saw just two base runners through the final three innings, with both being eliminated from the base pads via a pickoff and double play. As a team, the Vikings turned four double plays.
Zach DeMarlie went four innings on the mound to start the game for Augustana, not allowing an earned run through four innings of work.
Brian Fischer notched his fourth win of the season, completing the final five innings and allowing just one hit. The Vikings out-hit the Hornets 6-4 in the win, led by Mosele's 2-4 effort at the plate.
With the win, Augie improves to 13-5 on the year. The team will open conference play this upcoming weekend against Elmhurst.
